Demandez et on vous donnera

 Nous vous avons récemment parlé de notre nouveau groupe pour jeunes adultes....Voici un récapitulatif. 

À Casa Rocha, nous avons des "groupes" pour les enfants âgés de 6 à 12 ans, puis nous avons des groupes pour les adolescents - un groupe de garçons et un groupe de filles séparés mais tous deux âgés de 13 à 17 ans. Malheureusement, une fois qu'ils ont atteint l'âge de 18 ans, nous n'avons pas de groupes spécifiques, à l'exception de l'aquagym pour les femmes de plus de 40 ans... 

Nico est arrivé à Casa Rocha il y a 8 ans, alors quand vous pensez à ces enfants de 10 ans qui venaient aux groupes pour enfants, aujourd'hui il n'y a pas de groupe pour eux. Depuis quelque temps ils nous demandaient pourquoi il n'y avait pas de groupe pour eux. 

"Demandez et on vous donnera"....Depuis qu'ils ont commencé à demander, nous avons commencé à prier et nous avions ce désir dans nos cœurs de faire quelque chose pour ce groupe d'âge... mais pendant le COVID, ce n'était pas possible et ensuite nous étions en Europe pendant près de 6 mois.... mais maintenant nous sommes de retour, nous avons prié un peu plus et Nico et moi avons convenu que c'était à nous de commencer quelque chose avec ce groupe d'âge, surtout que nous avons des contacts avec beaucoup de jeunes adultes !

Un message d'un jeune a confirmé notre décision : "La semaine dernière, je disais à un ami à quel point le projet Casa Rocha me manque. Quand j'étais enfant, j'y étais tout le temps et puis il n'y a plus rien. En fait, je voulais vous demander pourquoi et maintenant j'ai su par un autre collègue que ce groupe pour jeunes adultes va commencer ! Je suis tellement reconnaissant. Je travaille pour moi, alors vous pouvez compter sur moi vendredi, je me libèrerai pour venir ! Reconnaissant !"

La semaine dernière, nous avons eu notre premier groupe le vendredi soir à 20h.... nous avons invité environ 20 jeunes, et 15 ont confirmé qu'ils viendraient ! Nous étions très excités car nous n'en attendions pas autant. Nous avons commandé des pizzas et du coca pour " commencer en beauté " ! Puis, le vendredi après-midi, nous avons commencé à recevoir quelques messages..... 

"Je suis désolé, je ne peux pas venir, ma copine est malade et je dois l'emmener à l'hôpital."

"Je suis désolé de ne pas pouvoir venir, j'ai des factures à payer et un bébé en route, je dois vraiment accepter ces heures sup' au travail".

"Je suis désolé, je viens d'avoir une grosse dispute avec ma copine, nous ne sommes pas en état de venir au groupe !"

Au final, 5 personnes sont venues ! Nous étions un peu déçus mais heureux de voir le respect de beaucoup de jeunes de nous écrire et nous prévenir ! Et les 5 qui sont venus se sont bien amusés ! Nous avons discuté, ri, et mangé BEAUCOUP de pizza !!!! J'ai partagé avec eux un mot sur le jeune riche qui est parti déçu de ne pas aller au paradis. Pourquoi ? Parce qu'il était riche ? Non ! Parce qu'il n'était pas prêt à faire passer Dieu avant tout le reste ! Nous avons parlé et partagé sur ce qui nous empêche de mettre Dieu en premier. Nous avons été surpris par l'ouverture de la majorité du groupe ! Nous avons passé un excellent moment ensemble. 

Nous avons décidé de faire le groupe une semaine sur deux pour commencer, pour voir comment ça se passe et pour que ce ne soit pas trop pour Nico et moi avec les enfants. Les jeunes voulaient toutes les semaines ! Nous verrons à l'avenir ! Mais pour l'instant, nous planifions déjà notre groupe pour ce vendredi... la majorité du groupe a demandé du temps dans la piscine ! Ce sera donc une nuit de baignade... bien sûr avec un bon goûter et surtout en partageant la parole de Dieu avec ces précieux jeunes!

S'il vous plaît, priez pour eux. Il y a tellement de tentations pour eux à cet âge et peu de choix pour mettre Dieu en premier dans leur vie. Priez pour que chaque fois que nous nous rencontrons, l'Esprit se manifeste et que nous voyions des choses extraordinaires se produire dans leur vie !

Ask and it shall be given...

 We recently shared about our new group for young adults....Here is a recap - 

In the Rock House we have "groups" for children aged between 6 and 12, then we have groups for teenagers - a boys group and girls group separated but both from the age of 13 to 17 years old. Unfortunately once they turn 18 we don't have any specific groups apart from the ladies water aerobics for over 40's... we have noticed that our "kids" are growing up. Nico arrived in the Rock House 8 years ago, so when you think about some of those little 10 year olds that came to the kids groups, today there is no group for them. They started questioning, 'Why isn't there a group for us?' 

Ask and it shall be given....Since they started asking we started praying and it weighed heavy on our hearts to do something for this age group... but during COVID it wasn't possible and then we travelled for nearly 6 months.... but now we are back we prayed some more and Nico and I agreed that it was for us to start something with this age group especially as we have contact with many youth this age!

A message from one youth confirmed our decision: "I was telling a friend last week how much I miss the project. When I was a kid I was there all the time and then there was nothing. I actually wanted to ask you why and now I got the news that this group for young adults will start! I'm so thankful. I work for myself so you can count on me on Friday, I'll make myself free to come! Grateful!"

Last week we had our first group on Friday night at 8pm.... we invited about 20 youth, and 15 confirmed they would come! We got very excited as we didn't expect that many. We ordered pizza's and coke to 'start with a blast!' Then on the Friday afternoon we started to receive some messages.... 

"I'm sorry I can't make it, my girlfriend is sick and I have to take her to the hospital."

"I'm sorry I can't come I have bills to pay and a baby on the way I really need to take a shift at work."

"I'm sorry I have just had a huge fight with my girlfriend we are in no condition to come to the group!"

In the end 5 turned up! We were a little disappointed but were happy to see the respect of many of the youth to write and let us know! And the 5 that came were great fun! We chatted, laughed, and ate A LOT of pizza!!!! I shared a word with them about the Rich Young Ruler who went away disappointed that he wouldn't go to heaven, why? Because he was rich? No! Because he wasn't willing to put God first above all else! We talked and shared about what 'gets in the way' of putting God first. We were surprised by the openness of the majority of the group! It was a great time together. 

We have decided to do the group every other week to begin with to see how it goes and to not be too much for Nico and I with the kids etc. The youth wanted every week! We will see for the future! But for now we are already planning our group for this Friday... the majority of the group asked for time in the pool!! So a night swim it will be... of course with a good snack and most importantly sharing God's word with these precious youth!!

Please do pray for them. There are so many temptations for them at this age and not so many choosing to put God first in their lives. Pray that each time we meet the Spirit will move and we will see extraordinary things happening among this age group!

A inspiring week in Rio de Janeiro with the team

It was so hot, the sweat dripping off my forehead, I had Keoni on my hip and holding onto Lorenzo tight with the other hand as we slowly walked up the big hill from our wee house in the slum to the base. Trying to avoid the motorbikes speeding past us, stepping over the stray dogs scurraging for food and making our way around the people hanging out on the street, I noticed in front of me a young guy no more than 16 years old also making his way slowly up that great big hill; shorts on and no t-shirt as the sun beat down, there I saw it, reflecting, a gun, stuck down his shorts. No one else looked at that gun, or that teen as he approached the group of drug dealers that hang there on the corner, normal, a normal sight in this slum in Rio.

That's where we spent a week with our team, in a slum called Borel in Rio de Janeiro with YWAM. Borel is known as one of the more dangerous slums in Rio due to the drug trafficking.

At the end of every year we do a "spiritual retreat" with our team in preparation for the next year. This year as we were enjoying our time in Europe it didn't happen. But since our return there have been some changes in our team; the brazilian family (Carlos and Josi) moved back to another YWAM project here in the city and Rynara went to another city to do a YWAM school and won't return. We also had Yenna join our team after she married Fabricio. We are now 6 in the team. 

With these changes and us returning after a long time away from the work it weighed heavy on our hearts to do something to help us refocus, be inspired and unify our team. We thought about a retreat but it seemed like that wouldn't be enough. So we decided to take our team to Rio to visit another YWAM base who are working in a slum there and have been for about 30 years.

We packed up the 2 cars, closed the doors of the Rock House and headed to Rio - a 7 hour drive.... of course we stopped a few times! We choose to stay near the beach for 2 nights to just enjoy - to have some fun with the team... some of them had never been to Rio before! It was great!! Three of the team went to visit the Christ the Redeemer statue but most of the time we spent on the Copocabana beach. Our kids especially loved it!!

After 2 days of bliss we packed up and drove to the other side of the city to a YWAM base in the centre of a slum. We arrived in the evening so it was dark and we couldn't see much, but we noticed the heat - we had left behind that beautiful sea breeze on the Copocabana. In the slum it was hot, hot, hot!! (Probably about 40C)

The base have a house in the slum that they use for staff, visitors etc so we as a family stayed there. It gave us a bit of an insight how it is to live in a slum house - one bedroom for us all, Lorenzo was supposed to be on the floor on a mattress but ended up in our bed as there were cockroaches in the house! The bathroom didn't have much room - you could go to the toilet while taking a shower... if you wanted!! haha

The next days we spent getting to know the base, the activities, the slum and spending time with the staff there, some of which have been working in the slum for 30 years - what an inspiration!

Community Development Creed

One activity from this base that really impressed all of us was the creche. About 30 years ago YWAM saw the need for a creche in the slum so some mums could go to work. They started with about 10 kids. Today they have about 120 kids from age 2 to 6 (at 6 they start school) and they all get lunch and snacks provided! Today the creche is fully run by women from the slum whom YWAM encouraged through the years to get a degree - even the director of the creche has now completed university, the teachers, cleaner, cook, everyone! YWAM used to only help with the finances since most of the resources for the creche was coming in through donations to YWAM. Recently though, the creche got approved from the local government and has become a model in the state of Rio de Janeiro! The creche will now get income from the government and so YWAM will not even interfere in finances anymore. We witnessed a full process of community development - the missionaries brought something new to the slum according to needs and now these missionaries passed the project to the community itself! What an inspiration !

The base also have a football group, a ladies group, teenage girls group (photo to left of us participating in the girls group) and even a music school.... they even have a music studio built! They use it for themselves but people from the slum and surrounding places can rent it for a small price to record their music! Amazing! (photo below is our team in the studio listening to our guide about the work done in that little space!)

In an abandoned space at the edge of the slum they have made a little garden and they motivate people from the slum to learn to take care of it and give seeds to plant in pots in their own homes. They grow all sorts of vegetables there such as acerola, tomatoes, cucumber, and all sorts of herbs like mint, parsley and coriander. YWAM presented the project to the government and it was accepted as a sustainable project - beneficial to the community, so it is the government who provide the resources!! 

We went to visit it one morning. To get there you have to walk through the slum, lots of alley ways, winding streets and many steps!! It was worth it.... and when we arrived we got to work alongside 3 people from the slum.... pulling up weeds and helping to clean up the spot, even Lorenzo got his hands dirty (I, Rachel sat under a tree in the shade with Keoni sleeping, heehee).

It was a great week, but a week was enough - we were all very happy to pack up the car and turn on the air-conditioning in the cars as we headed back to Belo Horizonte! To our home, our slum, our cooler weather..... yes the day we arrived in Belo it was 34C and it felt cool and fresh after our week in Rio! But we didn't come back empty handed, what we saw and experienced helped open our minds, gave us new ideas and new vision. It also made us very grateful for what we have and what we are doing, and for our team - although small now but this week together really brought us together even more and unified us as a team but also in our vision to love and serve Pedreira Prado Lopes, the slum that God has called us to.

Une semaine d'inspiration avec l'équipe à Rio de Janeiro

Il faisait si chaud, la sueur coulait de mon front, je portais Keoni et je tenais fermement Lorenzo de l'autre main alors que nous montions lentement depuis notre petite maison dans la favéla jusqu'à la base de JEM. En essayant d'éviter les motos qui passaient à toute vitesse devant nous, évitant les chiens errants qui se cherchaient dans les poubelles pour se nourrir et contournant les gens qui étaient dans la rue, j'ai remarqué devant moi un jeune d'environ 16 ans qui se dirigeait également lentement en haut de cette grande colline. En short et sans t-shirt alors que le soleil battait, là je l'ai vu, avec le reflet du soleil, un pistolet, à la ceinture de son short. Personne d'autre n'a regardé cette arme ou cet adolescent alors qu'il s'approchait du groupe de trafiquants de drogues qui errait au coin de la rue. "Normal", un spectacle normal dans cette favéla de Rio.

C'est là que nous avons passé une semaine avec notre équipe, dans une favéla de Rio appelée "Morro do Borel" (= colline de Borel) avec JEM. Borel est connu comme l'une des favélas les plus dangereuse de Rio en raison du trafic de drogues.

À la fin de chaque année, nous faisons une "retraite spirituelle" avec notre équipe en préparation de l'année suivante. Cette année, alors que nous profitions de notre séjour en Europe, cela ne s'est pas produit. Mais depuis notre retour, il y a eu quelques changements dans notre équipe ; la famille brésilienne (Carlos et Josi et leurs enfants) est retournée travailler avec un autre projet de JEM ici dans la ville et Rynara est allée à Curitiba pour faire une école de JEM et ne reviendra pas ici. Yenna, quant à elle, a rejoint notre équipe après s'être mariée avec Fabricio. Nous sommes maintenant 6 staffs dans l'équipe. (De gauche à droite sur la photo : Lucivania, Jamily, Rachel, Keoni, Lorenzo, Nico, Yenna et Fabricio). 

Avec ces changements et notre retour après notre voyage en Europe, nous avions besoin de quelque chose pour nous aider à nous recentrer, être inspirés et à unifier notre équipe. Nous avons pensé à une retraite sur le même format que les autres années, mais nous sentions que nous avions besoin de quelque chose de différent. Nous avons donc décidé d'emmener notre équipe à Rio pour visiter une autre base de JEM qui travaille, comme nous dans le développement communautaire, dans une favéla de Rio depuis environ 30 ans.

Nous avons chargé les 2 voitures, fermé les portes de Casa Rocha et pris la direction de Rio de Janeiro - 7 heures de route... bien sûr nous nous sommes arrêtés 2 ou 3 fois ! Nous avons pu rester près de la plage pendant 2 nuits pour simplement profiter - pour passer du temps en équipe... Certains des staffs n'étaient jamais allés à Rio auparavant. C'était super!! Trois membres de l'équipe sont allés visiter la statue du Christ Rédempteur mais nous avons passé la plupart du temps sur la plage de Copacabana. Nos enfants ont particulièrement adoré !!

Après 2 jours de "fare niente" à la plage, nous avons traversé une partie de la ville jusqu'à la base de JEM au centre de la favéla. Nous sommes arrivés le soir, donc il faisait noir et nous n'avons pas pu voir grand-chose, mais nous avons senti la chaleur étouffante - nous avions laissé derrière nous cette belle brise à Copacabana. Dans la favéla il faisait chaud, chaud, chaud !!

La base a "um barraco" (une barraque) qu'elle utilise pour les volontaires, les visiteurs, etc. Nous y sommes donc restés en famille tous les 4. Cela nous a donné un aperçu de comment vivent les familles dans les favélas - une chambre pour nous 4, Lorenzo était censé être par terre sur un matelas mais s'est retrouvé dans notre lit car il y avait des cafards dans la maison ! La salle de bain n'avait vraiment pas beaucoup de place - on pouvait aller aux toilettes en prenant une douche et se brosser les dents en même temps... si on voulait !! haha

Les jours suivants, nous avons appris à connaître la base, les activités, la favéla et avons passé du temps avec nos collègues missionnaires de Rio, dont certains travaillent dans la favéla depuis 30 ans - quelle inspiration !

"Le credo du Développement Communautaire

Va jusqu'au peuple, vit au milieu d'eux, apprends d'eux, planifie avec eux, commence avec ce qu'ils savent, construit avec ce qu'ils possèdent  

Enseigne en montrant, apprends en faisant, ce n'est pas une vitrine mais un système, ce n'est pas de l'aide mais c'est les rendre libres  

Mais les meilleurs leaders, quand ils terminent leur tâche et finalisent leur travail, le peuple dira : 

Avec l'aide de Dieu nous avons nous-même réalisé cela !"

Cela fait partie de ce que l'on enseigne dans l'école de Développement Communautaire à JEM et que nous vivons et essayons de mettre en pratique au quotidien...

 

Un projet de cette base qui nous a tous vraiment impressionnés est la crèche. Il y a environ 30 ans, quand JEM a commencé dans cette favéla, ils ont vu le besoin d'avoir une crèche dans la favéla, principalement pour que les mères célibataires puissent travailler. Ils ont commencé avec une dizaine d'enfants. Ils ont environ 120 enfants aujourd'hui de 2 à 6 ans  et ils reçoivent tous le déjeuner et les goûters ! Aujourd'hui, la crèche est entièrement gérée par des femmes de la favéla que JEM a encouragées, au fil des années, à obtenir un diplôme qui pourrait leur servir - la directrice de la crèche a donc terminé l'université ainsi que les enseignants ! JEM n'aidait, ces dernières années, qu'avec les finances car la plupart des ressources de la crèche provenaient de dons à JEM. Récemment, la crèche a été approuvée par la mairie de Rio et est même devenue un modèle dans l'état de Rio de Janeiro ! La crèche recevra désormais des revenus du gouvernement et donc JEM n'interférera même plus dans les finances. Nous avons assisté à un processus complet de développement communautaire alors que les missionnaires apportaient quelque chose de nouveau à la favéla en fonction des besoins et en incluant toujours les habitants, et maintenant, cette crèche est le projet de la communauté elle-même ! Quelle inspiration !

La base a également un projet de football, un groupe de femmes, un groupe d'adolescentes (photo à gauche) et même une école de musique... Ils ont même construit un studio d'enregistrement ! Ils l'utilisent avec les élèves de l'école de musique mais aussi pour les gens de la favéla et des environs qui le louent à petit prix pour enregistrer leur musique ! Impressionnant ! (la photo ci-dessous montre notre équipe dans le studio pendant l'explication)

Dans un espace abandonné de la favéla, ils ont fait un petit potager communautaire et ils motivent les habitants de la favéla à apprendre à cultiver et donnent des graines à planter dans des pots chez eux. Ils y cultivent toutes sortes de fruits et légumes comme l'acérola, les tomates, le concombre et toutes sortes d'herbes comme la menthe, le persil et la coriandre. JEM a présenté le projet au gouvernement et il a été accepté car bénéfique pour la communauté, c'est donc le gouvernement qui fournit les ressources !!

Nous sommes allés voir ce potager un matin. Pour y arriver, vous devez traverser une partie de la favéla, de nombreuses ruelles, des rues sinueuses et de nombreuses marches d'escalier !! Ça valait le coup.... et quand nous sommes arrivés, nous avons travaillé aux côtés de 3 habitants de la favéla.... arrachant les mauvaises herbes et aidant à nettoyer le lieu, même Lorenzo s'est sali les mains ! Moi, Rachel je suis restée assise sous un arbre à l'ombre pour que Keoni dorme, hahaha).

Ce fut une belle semaine, mais une semaine suffisait - nous étions tous très heureux de reprendre la voiture et d'allumer la climatisation alors que nous revenions à Belo Horizonte ! Dans notre maison, notre favéla, notre climat un peu plus frais..... oui le jour de notre retour à Belo, il faisait 34 ° C et il faisait frais et après notre semaine à Rio ! Mais nous ne sommes pas revenus les mains vides, ce que nous avons vu et vécu nous a ouvert l'esprit, nous a donné de nouvelles idées et une nouvelle vision. Cela nous a également rendus très reconnaissants pour ce que nous avons et ce que nous faisons, et pour notre équipe - bien que petite maintenant. Cette semaine ensemble nous a vraiment unis encore plus en tant qu'équipe mais aussi dans notre vision d'aimer et de servir la favéla Pedreira Prado Lopes, la favéla où Dieu nous a appelés.
