Cinq mois et trois saisons...

Cinq mois se sont écoulés depuis nos dernières nouvelles sur ce blog. Entre temps, nous avons pu rencontrer plusieurs d'entre vous, que ce soit en Irlande du Nord ou en France ! Donc ce n'était pas cinq mois de silence mais plutôt de nouvelles en personne ! Nous avons beaucoup apprécié chaque conversation ou moment partagé avec chacun d'entre vous... Malgré tout, on a décidé d'écrire quelques lignes alors si ça vous dit, on y va...

Bien sûr on va résumer ces cinq mois et trois saisons traversés en Europe mais on aimerait partager quelques souvenirs :

- Un été reposant

Nous sommes d'abord arrivés en août en France pour 3 semaines dont 10 jours de quarantaine. Puis nous sommes allés en Irlande du Nord avec une nouvelle quarantaine de 10 jours ! En un mois nous avons passé 20 jours en quarantaine! Mais finalement, vous savez quoi ? C'était super d'avoir ces temps d'isolement pour vraiment se reposer et ne pas avoir le choix que de rester à la maison. Des moments de qualité avec nos parents, de rencontre aussi car c'était la première fois qu'ils rencontraient et passaient du temps avec Keoni et que Lorenzo pouvait communiquer avec eux! Bref, un été reposant.

- Un agréable automne irlandais...

Quelle surprise de voir que l'automne en Irlande était finalement très agréable, avec quelques pluies de temps à autre bien sûr, sinon l'Irlande ne serait pas aussi verte ! Au-delà du climat, nous avons passé de très bons moments entre famille, amis, église, moments à 4, à l'intérieur mais aussi dans les parcs, à la plage... et j'ai même découvert le golf (Nico) ! 

Nous avons passé beaucoup de moments en famille pour donner à Keoni et Lorenzo le temps de bien connaître leurs cousins. Ils ont adoré chaque moment avec eux, que ce soit en jouant chez eux ou en courant dans les parcs ou les fermes. De belles expériences pour les garçons et beaucoup de "premières fois". Nous avons également adoré voir ces relations se développer et passer du temps avec nos neveux et enfin rencontrer notre petite nièce née une semaine avant notre départ d'Irlande.

C'était bon aussi de retourner à l'église après avoir regardé, comme beaucoup, les cultes en ligne pendant si longtemps et d'avoir l'opportunité de partager à la fois à Ballynahinch Baptist Church et Grace Fellowship (deux églises partenaires en Irlande du Nord). Il est toujours agréable de revenir et de ressentir l'amour et le soutien de nos églises.

L'un des moments qui restera un très bon souvenir est notre semaine tous les quatre passée en Ecosse chez les parents de notre beau-frère qui nous ont gentiment prêté leur maison. On a pu visiter un peu de ce pays magnifique mais surtout prendre du temps pour nous, pour nos enfants, découvrir ensemble et apprécier la beauté de la nature ! Bref, un agréable automne irlandais, mais pas que.

-  ... et un hiver français bien frais.

Le froid pique en France, Lorenzo plusieurs fois nous dit qu'il a froid ! Mais on se réchauffe souvent autour d'un bon repas avec la famille ou entre amis ! Là encore ce séjour nous permet de revoir beaucoup de personnes, de partager et réfléchir aussi, de prier et voyager. Nous avons en effet bougé pas mal entre les départements de la Drôme, du Vaucluse de l'Hérault et du Rhône. Cela a été un peu difficile pour les enfants qui ont dû faire preuve de pas mal d'adaptation, ce qui les a quand même bien fatigués. Nous rappeler ça, nous aide à être plus patients avec eux mais dans l'ensemble tout s'est très bien passé. Ce qui était plus difficile était que les deux garçons semblaient attraper tous les rhumes et toux qui passaient dans l'air et Keoni a même eu la varicelle ! 

Et en parlant de maladie, notre plus grande déception a été que mes parents (Nico) ont eu le Covid à la fin de notre séjour. Nous étions censés rester avec eux et passer Noël tous ensemble mais ça n'a pas été possible. Sur une note positive, nous avons alors passé plus de temps chez ma sœur et mon beau-frère avec leurs enfants ainsi qu'un séjour imprévu chez ma tante et mon oncle à Noël. 

Noël était super spécial - malgré le fait de ne pas avoir célébré
avec mes parents (qui ont dû rester en isolement) - mais nous étions avec ma sœur et sa famille, mes oncles, tantes et cousins. Cela faisait 8 ans que je ne passais pas Noël avec ma famille. Nous avons eu droit à un très bon repas et les garçons ont apprécié d'ouvrir les cadeaux avec leurs cousins ​​le matin de Noël. Voilà comment s'est passé notre hiver français bien frais.

- Prêt pour l'été à nouveau ?

L'une des raisons de notre séjour prolongé en Europe était de réfléchir et prier par rapport à notre engagement à JEM Belo Horizonte. Notre engagement moral pris envers la base s'est terminé en décembre 2021 et nous voulions rechercher la volonté de Dieu pour la suite. Nous avons prié et discuté entre nous et avec des amis et pasteurs pendant ces cinq mois et avons entendu de Dieu que notre temps à Belo Horizonte n'est pas terminé. Nous nous réengageons donc avec JEM Belo Horizonte pour encore 3 ans. Nous prévoyons quelques changements, notamment de quitter la base pour louer notre propre maison, mais nous prévoyons de rester dans le même quartier proches de Casa Rocha. Ce changement aidera à rendre possible certains projets que nous avons pour les années à venir mais nous vous tiendrons au courant de tout cela par la suite.

Nous attendons avec impatience que Lorenzo commence l'école en février - c'est le début de l'année scolaire pour le Brésil. Lorenzo languit car ici en Europe il a vu ses cousins ​y ​aller tous les jours et il demandait quand il pourrait lui aussi aller à l'école ! Un bel été brésilien en perspective...

S'il vous plaît, gardez-nous dans vos prières alors que nous retournons au Brésil début janvier et que nous nous réadaptons à la vie "chez nous", surtout pour les enfants et encore plus pour Keoni qui a maintenant passé plus de temps de sa vie en Europe que chez lui ! Et s'il vous plaît, priez pour les changements, notamment la maison, et nos projets futurs.

Quelques changement dont adaptation à vie de famille à 4

Eh bien, il s'est passé tellement de choses depuis la dernière fois que nous avons écrit - nous sommes maintenant une famille de quatre… Et cela suffit vraiment en soi mais on aimerait vous en dire un peu plus !

Mais d'abord, nous savons que vous aimez entendre parler de nous et de notre évolution et je suis sûr que vous avez envie de voir des photos récentes de notre petite famille et surtout de Keoni !

Il va très bien, il aime beaucoup son lait et prend du poids rapidement… cela a été une réponse à la prière car avec Lorenzo, nous avons eu beaucoup de difficultés dans ce domaine, ce qui a obligé à lui donner du lait en poudre en même temps que l'allaitement. Jusqu'à présent, Keoni est exclusivement allaitée et tout semble bien se passer. Une autre chose que Keoni aime, c'est son grand frère… Lorenzo a tellement d'affection pour lui et l'embrasse constamment, lui caresse la tête ou lui parle. Cela a récemment fait sourire Keoni et il essaie de répondre... il aime aussi regarder Lorenzo pendant qu'il joue.

Cela a été un défi de s'adapter à la vie à quatre, surtout d'être si loin de nos familles qui prendraient plaisir à nous aider si nous étions plus proches. C'est dommage que personne n'ait pu nous rendre visite pour le rencontrer, mais nous nous débrouillons et sommes très reconnaissants envers nos collègues qui aiment câliner Keoni et adorent jouer avec Lorenzo…. Et Lorenzo les aime - il prie tous les soirs pour chacun d'eux !

Lorsque Keoni est né, nous étions juste à la fin d'un autre confinement ici à Belo Horizonte, donc c'était génial d'avoir l'équipe cette première semaine pour nous aider. Mais la semaine après la levée du confinement, l'équipe a décidé de retourner dans la favéla pour faire des visites et recommencer la distribution d'aliments (nous recevons chaque semaine des fruits et légumes que nous donnons aux familles qui se sont enregistrées). Nous avons également eu la chance de recevoir plus de colis alimentaires et avons donc pu organiser leur distribution, environ 75 au cours des 6 dernières semaines. C'est un tel privilège de bénir la favéla de cette façon en sachant qu'il y a un tel besoin et surtout à une époque où nous ne pouvons faire que peu.

Au cours de l'une de ces collectes de « colis alimentaires », une mère a laissé échapper : « Vous ne pouvez pas me trouver un centre de désintoxication pour que je puisse arrêter de boire ». Sa situation était allée de mal en pis et même son fils de 14 ans est allé vivre avec sa grand-mère à cause de la situation. Elle-même avait soudainement réalisé l'état alarmant dans lequel elle se trouvait. Pour trouver un centre de désintoxication pour quelqu'un, notre première exigence est le désir de la personne d'y aller... C'est ce qui l'aidera à rester dans le programme car ce n'est pas facile. Suite à un certain nombre de visites que nous avons organisées pour nous assurer qu'elle le souhaitait vraiment, nous l'avons finalement emmenée. Elle est là-bas depuis un mois et se porte très bien même si elle se plaint du poids qu'elle prend maintenant qu'elle mange bien !!

La semaine dernière, l'équipe est allée passer une matinée au centre de désintoxication pour passer un temps avec toutes les femmes présentes. Ils ont eu un temps de louange, un partage et ils ont prié pour elles. Ils ont ensuite passé du temps à discuter avec les femmes les encourageant et priant individuellement pour elles. Les femmes demandent déjà que l'équipe y retourne !

La situation avec la Covid-19 est toujours très grave, mais avec chaque niveau de gouvernement disant quelque chose de différent et le président lui-même prenant toujours la situation à la légère, tout le monde commence à faire un peu ce qu'il veut. Donc, en équipe, nous avons décidé de recommencer les groupes - juste des petits groupes pas comme avant. Nous avons donc 2 groupes hebdomadaires de femmes et 2 groupes hebdomadaires d'enfants (8/groupe) et il y aura un groupe mensuel d'hommes.

Les groupes ont commencé mais pour nous protéger ainsi que ceux qui participent, nous essayons d'appliquer les règles - porter un masque tout temps, à l'arrivée on prend la température et utilisation du gel hydro-alcoolique. Jusqu'à présent, ces restrictions sont bien acceptées.

Nico et moi avons développé une forte amitié avec un couple de la favéla au long de nos années ici - Nivaldo et Tiane. Passer du temps avec eux n'est pas du travail mais plutôt du temps avec des amis. C'est un couple chrétien qui a connu le Seigneur grâce au travail de Casa Rocha avant que nous arrivions. Ils participent à une session hebdomadaire de discipulat avec un autre couple qui travaille avec nous et a soif de plus du Seigneur. Tiane souffre de dépression mais est stable avec les médicaments. La petite amie de 17 ans de leur fils qui en a 19 vient de donner naissance à une petite fille appelée Helena. Récemment, Nico et moi avons essayé de passer plus de temps avec eux - nous essayons de faire des dîners hebdomadaires. C'est vraiment bien parce que toute la famille vient maintenant, alors qu'avant ce n'était que Nivaldo et Tiane. Lors de notre dernière rencontre, j'ai préparé un plat d'Irlande du Nord (adapté avec des ingrédients brésiliens) - ils ont adoré !! C'est toujours une excellente soirée avec de bonnes discussions, approfondir nos relations et... bien sûr manger !

Un autre événement qui s'est produit pendant cette période était le mariage de Jonatas. Jonatas était un enfant accueilli à l'époque où JEM avait une maison d'accueil quand je (Rachel) suis arrivée en 2010. J'étais là pour assister à son « départ du foyer » et le voir commencer une vie en dehors du refuge. Cela a été incroyable de suivre son histoire au fil des ans. J'ai même été invitée avec un petit groupe dans sa petite maison pour dîner un soir ! Comme c'est encourageant de voir un garçon qui a eu auparavant besoin d'être accueilli en foyer, réussir dans la vie. Cela a été un véritable encouragement de le voir grandir dans sa foi aussi, car lorsqu'il a quitté le foyer, il n'était pas pleinement convaincu de sa foi dans le Seigneur, mais par ses propres décisions aujourd'hui, il est un vrai témoin pour les autres. Et maintenant, il vient d'épouser une charmante fille appelée Raquel qui est volontaire à JEM.

Nous avons été invités au mariage en mars mais il a dû être reporté à cause du Covid. Ils avaient prévu une petite cérémonie lors de cette première date, mais ils ont dû reporter et ont organisé le mariage et la fête en mai. Nous avions prévu d'y aller même si Keoni n'avait que 6 semaines mais je voulais voir Jonatas se marier ! Mais cette semaine-là, un membre de notre équipe a eu des symptômes de covid…. Nous avons dû nous isoler et n'avons pas pu assister au mariage ! J'étais tellement déçue !! (surtout quand il s'est avéré que ce n'était pas Covid et que nous aurions pu y aller !!)

Une amie et moi avons organisé une petite fête pour le couple nouvellement marié et avons invité des personnes qui n'ont pas pu assister au mariage. Nous avons eu un temps de prière et grâce au zoom, nous avons invité certains des anciens membres de JEM qui avaient travaillé avec Jonatas pendant son séjour au foyer…. C'était très spécial de revoir Eliude de Salvador de Bahia, Milton et Mia qui vivent maintenant en Finlande ! Parmi ceux qui sont venus faire la fête figuraient 4 autres ex-garçons du foyer ! C'était un bon moment et ça ressemblait un peu à des retrouvailles. C'était agréable de bénir le couple dans la prière et bien sûr de terminer notre temps ensemble avec un gâteau. C'est un tel encouragement de voir Jonatas et ces 4 autres gars aller si bien, tous marchant avec le Seigneur et ayant réussir dans la vie (2 sont maintenant missionnaires dans JEM !)

C'est rare qu'on « voie » les fruits de notre travail alors quand ça arrive c'est très spécial ! Mais Dieu me rappelle constamment que je dois être fidèle à l'appel qu'il a pour ma vie…. Et souvent, ce n'est pas pour "voir" les fruits mais pour "planter" la graine et parfois à "arroser la graine" plantée par d'autres.

1 Corinthiens 3 v 6 - 8

« J'ai planté la graine, Apollos l'a arrosée, mais Dieu l'a fait pousser. Donc ni celui qui plante ni celui qui arrose n'est rien, mais Dieu seul, qui fait pousser les choses. Celui qui plante et celui qui arrose ont un seul but, et ils seront chacun récompensés selon leur propre travail."

En voyant Jonatas se marier et en repensant à son histoire, j'ai réalisé que j'étais au Brésil depuis près de 11 ans ! C'est une longue période! Depuis plus d'un an environ, j'ai le désir de rentrer chez moi et de prendre un temps plus long à la maison. Au cours de la dernière année, ce désir s'est accru et s'y sont ajoutées de nombreuses autres raisons pour un séjour prolongé à la maison. L'une étant l'année que nous avons tous eue avec la Covid, comme nous l'avons partagé auparavant. Il a été très difficile pour nous d'essayer de guider l'équipe, de motiver pendant cette crise. Parce que la situation n'a pas changé de façon spectaculaire ici au Brésil, nous pensons que c'est le moment idéal pour prendre ce temps et se ressourcer. Rentrer à la maison pour une période prolongée a également pour objectif pour Nico et moi de passer plus de temps dans la culture de l'autre - de mieux connaître nos familles et d'apprécier la vie en France et en Irlande du Nord. Jusqu'à maintenant, nous ne passions qu'un mois dans chaque pays et le temps était tellement occupé à voir tout le monde... Maintenant, nous avons aussi Keoni ! Lorenzo a rencontré nos familles pendant un mois lorsqu'il a eu 1 an maintenant, il a presque 3 ans et nos familles ne le connaissent vraiment que par les appels vidéo ! Nous aimerions que nos familles puissent passer du temps avec Lorenzo et aussi rencontrer Keoni et que nos garçons aient du temps avec leurs cousins ​​!

Donc, si Dieu le veut, notre plan est de rentrer à la maison début août et de retourner au Brésil après Noël ! Pour voyager, nous avons besoin que Keoni ait un passeport. Nous avons obtenu le passeport français pour Lorenzo et le consulat français a été très efficace. Cette fois, nous avons réservé notre rendez-vous - à Rio de Janeiro et 4 jours avant le rendez-vous, ils ont envoyé un e-mail pour dire qu'il avait été annulé et que le consulat serait fermé jusqu'au 19 juillet. Nous sommes très frustrés par cette situation, mais avec de nombreux e-mails et appels téléphoniques, nous avons découvert que Keoni peut voyager avec son passeport brésilien et dès que nous arrivons en France, nous devons demander son passeport français. Veuillez prier avec nous pour que ce plan fonctionne et qu'il n'y ait pas de complications à l'arrivée.

Family of four and more changes...

Well so much has happened since we last wrote - we are now a family of four…. And that is really enough in itself but I am here to write and tell you a lot more!

Our Family

But first, we know you love to hear about us and how we are doing and I am sure you are wanting to see some recent photos of our little family and especially of Keoni!

He is doing really well, he loves his milk and is gaining weight fast… this has been an answer to prayer as with Lorenzo we had a lot of difficulty in this area which resulted in having to give him some formula milk along with breastfeeding. So far Keoni is exclusively being breastfed and it seems to be going well. Another thing Keoni loves is his big brother… Lorenzo has so much affection for him and is constantly kissing him, rubbing his head or talking to him. This has recently been making Keoni smile and he tries to talk back...also he loves watching Lorenzo as he plays.

It's been a challenge adapting to life as four especially being so far away from family who would be so helpful if we were closer. Also so sad that no one has been able to visit, but we are managing and are very grateful for our co-workers who love to cuddle Keoni and love playing with Lorenzo…. And Lorenzo loves them - he prays every night for each of them!

News from the Rock House

When Keoni was born we were just at the end of another lockdown here in Belo, so it was great to have the team that first week to be more hands on to help us since there was no work allowed. But the week after the lockdown was lifted the team decided to go back into the community to do family visits and to give out the food donations again (we receive weekly perishable foods that we donate to the families who have registered). We have also been blessed to receive more food packages and so were able to organise giving these out, approximately 75 in the last 6 weeks. It's such a privilege to bless the community in this way knowing that there is such a need and especially during a time when we could do so little.

"Find me a rehab!"

During one of these “food package” collections one mum blurted out - “can’t you find me a rehab so I can stop drinking”. Her situation had gone from bad to worse and even her 14 year old son had gone to live with his grandma because of the situation. She herself had suddenly realised the desperate state she was in. To find a rehab for someone our first requirement is the desire of the individual to go...as this is what will help them stay in the programme as it is not easy to leave their addictions. Following a number of visits that we set up to make sure they really want it, we finally arrived at the day to take her to the rehab. She has been there a month so far and is doing really well although she is complaining about how much weight she is putting on now that she is eating well!! 

Last week the team went to spend a morning at the rehab to be a blessing to all the women there. They took some time leading the women in worship, bringing them a word from God and praying for them. They then spent time chatting with the women individually, encouraging them and praying for them. The women are already asking for the team to return!

Restarting life again...

The situation with Covid-19 is still very serious but with each level of government saying something different and the president himself still taking the situation so lightly, it's time to make some wise decisions for ourselves. So as a team we decided to start up some groups - just little groups not like before Covid. So we have 2 weekly ladies groups and 2 weekly kid's groups and there will be a monthly men's group.

The groups have started but to protect us and those coming into the community centre there are some rules - wear a mask at all times, on arrival have your temperature taken and wash your hands with alcohol gel. So far each group member is complying with these restrictions.

Friends together

Nico and I have developed a strong friendship with a couple from the slum - Nivaldo and Tiane, spending time with them doesn’t seem like work to us but rather time with friends. They are a Christian couple who came to know the Lord through the work of the Rock House. They are participating in a weekly discipleship session with another couple who work with us and are hungry for more of the Lord. Tiane suffers from depression but is stable with medication. Their sons' 16 year old girlfriend just gave birth to a little girl called Helena and they have a 15 year old daughter. Recently Nico and I have been trying to spend more time with them - we are trying to do weekly dinners. It's really good because the whole family now come, normally it would only be Nivaldo and Tiane. At our last get together I made a Northern Ireland dish (adapted with Brazilian ingredients) - Chicken and Broccoli bake - they loved it!! It’s always a great evening of chat and building deeper relationships and eating of course!

Shelter boy gets married!

Another event that happened during this time was the marriage of Jonatas. Jonatas was a “boy” in the YWAM shelter when I arrived in 2010. I was there to witness his “leaving the shelter” and starting up a life for himself outside of the shelter. It has been amazing to follow his story over the years. I was even invited with a small group to his small home to have dinner one night! How cool to see a boy who previously needed to go to a shelter to be able to find success in life. It has been a real encouragement to watch him grow in his faith also, as when he left the shelter he wasn’t fully convinced of his faith in the Lord but through his own decisions today he is a great witness to others. And now he is has just married a lovely girl called Raquel. 

We got invited to the wedding in March but it had to be postponed because of Covid. They had planned a small ceremony on that first date but they rescheduled and had the wedding and party in May. We were planning on going even though Keoni was only 6 weeks old but I wanted to see Jonatas get married! But that week one of our staff members had some covid symptoms…. So that meant we had to isolate ourselves and were not able to attend the wedding! I was so disappointed!! (especially when it turned out not be Covid so we could have gone!!)

A friend and I arranged a small party for the newly married couple and invited people who couldn’t attend the wedding. We had a time of prayer and through zoom we invited some of the ex-staff who had worked with Jonatas during his time in the shelter…. This was very special as it included Eliude in Salvador, Brazil and Milton and Mia who now live in Finland! Those who came to the party included 4 other ex-boys from the shelter! It was a great time and felt a bit like a reunion. It was lovely to bless the couple in prayer and of course finish our time together with a cake. It’s such an encouragement to see Jonatas and these 4 other guys doing so well, all walking with the Lord and having success in life (2 are now missionaries in YWAM!)

A wee thought

It’s rare we “see” the fruits of the work of YWAM or from our own investment so when it happens it's very special! But God reminds us constantly that we need to be faithful to the Calling He has on our lives…. And many times that is not to “see” the fruits but our job is to plant the seed and sometimes to “water the seed” planted by others. 

1 Corinthians 3 v 6 - 8

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labour.”

 

So whats next...

Seeing Jonatas get married and thinking back over his story I realised I have been in Brazil nearly 11 years! That's a long time! 

For over a year or so I have had a desire to go home and take a more decent time at home - a proper sabbatical. Over the last year this desire has grown and added to it many other reasons for an extended time at home. One being the year we have all had with Covid, as we have shared before it has been very difficult for us trying to lead an unmotivated team during this crisis. Because also the situation hasn’t changed dramatically here in Brazil we feel this an ideal time to take some leave. Coming home for an extended time is also with the goal for Nico and I to spend more time in each others cultures - getting to know our families better and to appreciate life in France and N.Ireland. Previously we only spent a month in each country and the time was so busy seeing everyone, connecting with our churches and supporters etc. Also now we have Keoni too! Lorenzo met our families for a month when he turned 1 now he is nearly 3 years old and our families only know him really through Whatsapp calls! We would love our families to be able to spend time with Lorenzo and also to meet Keoni and for our boys to have time with their cousins! 

So our plan God willing is to come home at the beginning of August and return to Brazil after Christmas! To travel we need Keoni to have a European passport. We got the french passport for Lorenzo and the french consulate was very efficient. This time we booked our appointment - in Rio de Janeiro and 4 days before the appointment they sent an email to say it had been cancelled and the consulate will be closed until the 19th July. We are very frustrated at this situation but with many emails and phone calls we have discovered that it is okay for Keoni to travel on his Brazilian passport and as soon as we arrive in France we need to apply for his french passport to be able to travel to Ireland. Please pray with us that this plan will work out and there will be no complications upon arrival.

A first trimester that seems too much like 2020...

Hello everyone!

It's been a while since we've written anything. Between frustrations, waiting, expectations, hope and other emotions, we do not really know what to say. We have the impression of losing control (and it's not just an impression!) We are motivated and suddenly the situation changes again, we believe we have learned something and then we fall back into questioning... In short, it is for these reasons that it has been a while since we wrote anything but that does not mean that we forgot about you, on the contrary! 

But let's go, here is some news:

The slum "Pedreira Prado Lopes"

Let's start with the best! Rachel's pregnancy is still going well. Rachel is doing well but she is tired and really longs for the birth, to feel "lighter". All the examinations and follow-ups show that the baby is doing well. Lorenzo also longs for his arrival, he often tells us "baby, baby" and gives kisses to Rachel's tummy. We can't wait to see how Lorenzo will adapt but we think he will be a great big brother! As for the hospital, we will be able to go to the same place with the same doctor that we had for the birth of Lorenzo and, this time, everything is covered by the insurance that goes with my (Nico's) status as an 'International Solidarity Volunteer'. It is a real blessing and we Thank God to have this status for almost 2 years now through the partnership between the association of my church in Avignon and Défap (Protestant mission organization approved by the state to offer this status). We pray that everything goes well and that with this Covid situation, Lorenzo will handle it well because he will not be able to see Rachel for up to 48 hours (which has never happened to him!). Nico is allowed to stay in the hospital during the 48 hours but if he leaves he will not be able to come back again, which is why we have prepared a whole plan with our friends here so that Lorenzo does not feel alone during these two days and that he will be well taken care of but it may be difficult for him. Please pray for that.

In December / January, all Casa Rocha staff were able to return home for the summer holidays. We therefore decided to also take 5 days away as a family in the nature (One and a half hours drive from our home). But things turned out a little differently than we had expected, the day we arrived there Rachel started to have a cold and a cough and was feeling exceptionally tired, but thought maybe it was the pregnancy. The next morning it was Nico who had a headache but for him it is not really an alert of illness since he often gets headaches... 

In short, we weren't really bad, but on the third day, Nico had a fever. We wanted to be tested for Covid-19 but there was not a single place to do the test in the village where we were. We decided to shorten the holiday to get tested so that if it was covid that we would not pass it on to all the other tourists who were in the same "pousada" (Bed & Breakfast). This was quite devastating as it was our chance to refresh before starting back the work with the team.

But it was a good decision as it was indeed Covid!! We therefore had to isolate ourselves for 2 weeks. For Rachel, it affected her quite a lot and we got a little scared with the pregnancy, but our doctor assured us the baby was fine and she took really good care of Rachel sending prescriptions via phone for medicine. Rachel also took several weeks to fully recover especially from the exhaustion. For Nico it was quite fast and after a week he was fine. The good thing about it all is that the "pousada" agreed to give us credit for the days we couldn't stay and so we were able to go back for a weekend in early March and take advantage of some time as a family.

What about the Covid situation? Well it's the same or even worse than in 2021 here. The political organization is that one advocates a measure and the other is against it. Everyone at their authority level (president, minister, state governor, mayor) do what they want. People are therefore lost! They more or less respect the measures but many cannot stop working because many are paid by the day or the week.

This leads to situations where even when the city is "closed" several non-essential businesses continue to operate with the store gate closed and one person seated in front. When you tell him what you want, either he calls someone inside who brings it to you, or he lets you in and closes the gate. It's a strange way to go shopping.

In the favela where we are, cases are multiplying and it is spreading across the favela, to the point that an entire building has isolated itself and people we know are hospitalized or in isolation. To be honest we are surprised that this only happening now after a year because, as we said in a previous post, the people who live in the favela consider the streets as their "garden" and do not put on the mask when they are in the favela.

When everyone in Casa Rocha came came back from their holidays (and we were out of isolation) we began the year doing visits in the community, continuing to be the only ones who use a mask! It was great to reconnect with the families and we are always received with joy. But with the rising cases, the hospitals to capacity, the city taking new measures and our discovery of just how many are being affected by the virus within the community and not taking the precautions like isolating themselves or using masks, we therefore had to suspend again our activities which were already very reduced! Basically we were mainly doing home visits and food distribution. We have therefore also stopped home visits to avoid contact with the inhabitants of the favela and we have adapted the form of food distribution to limit contact. with the people who receive. 

It's frustrating because in mid-February we were able to do our week of preparation as a team for the year 2021. Each year we go as a team to a Christian holiday centre, 1 hour from home to spend time together outside Casa Rocha continuing to build unity in the team but also to pray together and seek the will of God for what must be done in Casa Rocha. We knew very well that this year was going to be special too and that we were going to have to adapt, but we were not thinking of stopping activities again.

The whole team was super motivated after this week but now we feel cut off in our momentum.

As we say to ourselves (Rachel and I) a few times: if it weren't for the baby to be born here, we would surely be in Ireland or France but we know that this is also not God's calling for us at this time. Also, we know that it will be easier in terms of visas if our child is born in Brazil. So we hold on and we really hope that after 2 years away from our families that we will to be able to return in August or September this year.

If you could pray for all the administrative procedures that will follow the birth, to go quickly, so that the baby is also recognized French and that we can make his Brazilian and French passports to be able to travel.

So this is where we are. But we also take care, don't worry and we don't stop! Since we avoid going out, we take the opportunity to do maintenance work in Casa Rocha, painting and tiling among other things. The house is starting to look really well but there is always so much to do!!

So like we said at the beginning it continues to be a time of ups and downs and we know that it is not just us, it's worldwide! But we continue to trust in Him who is not up and down, He who does not lose control, HE who is still present and knows everything. And that is what continues to give us hope and joy amidst everything.
