Pas de rentrée au Brésil mais quand même du nouveau

C'est la rentrée pour vous mais ici l'année continue. Les sujets de conversation ici sont souvent les mêmes: les prochaines élections présidentielles et le Brésil qui doit gagner la coupe de monde qui arrive!! Pour le premier on ne va pas en parler ici pour éviter les conversations très virulentes comme c'est souvent le cas ici et pour le deuxième on ne peut qu'espérer qu'ils se trompent et que la France gagne... Mais on a quand même quelques petites histoires à vous raconter !!!

Voici deux photos de Lorenzo et Keoni qui grandissent trop vite!

Voilà quelques nouvelles de notre famille et de la mission. Merci encore pour vos prières (et svp ne vous arrêtez pas !), et pour votre participation financière (svp ne vous arrêtez pas non plus !). 

Les jeunes mamans

Depuis un moment, Rachel en tant que maman, essaie de s'investir un peu dans la vie des mamans de la favéla, beaucoup de mamans qui retiennent son attention sont de jeunes mères, parfois adolescentes (17 ans). Elle les invite chez nous pour discuter, partager et boire un café. Un jour, elle a invité 2 mamans ensemble pour voir comment ça se passerait et l'une d'elles a demandé : "Pourquoi Casa Rocha n'a pas de groupe spécifique pour les mamans ?" Pendant notre courte pause en juillet (au Brésil les écoles ont 2 semaines de vacances fin juillet), Rachel a pris le temps de prier et de réfléchir à cette idée...

L'idée est devenue un projet !

Nous avons commencé le groupe des mamans le 11 août ! Chaque jeudi matin, elles peuvent venir à Casa Rocha avec leurs bébés pour avoir un temps ensemble et partager leurs expériences, discuter. Rachel partage également un petit mot chaque semaine sur une histoire biblique. Il y a souvent un bébé qui pleure ou une couche à changer ou 2 enfants qui se disputent des jouets !!! Mais un mot partagé est une graine semée !!

Le groupe a commencé avec 4 mamans et est passé à 9 mamans maintenant. Elles sont toutes super motivées par le groupe et rêvent de ce que nous pourrions faire ensemble - nager avec leurs bébés, faire des excursions dans les parcs pour pique-niquer,  avoir un repas avec toutes nos familles un dimanche midi... C'est super de voir comment cette idée est venue de l'une d'entre elles et de voir l'engouement qu'elles ressentent à être ensemble !

Jusqu'à présent, Rachel utilise les jouets et autres équipements de nos enfants pour le groupe, mais l'idée serait d'avoir des personnes qui soutiendraient financièrement ce groupe pour qu'on puisse investir dans des tapis de jeu, des jouets pour les bébés et les tout-petits, des poussettes cannes qu'on puisse prêter à ces jeunes mamans ! Priez pour les jeunes mamans qui viennent chaque semaine ; qu'elles soient encouragées et fortifiées pour continuer à prendre soin de leurs petits que Dieu a confié entre leurs mains !

Psaume 127:3-5 : "L’héritage que l’Eternel donne, ce sont des fils; les enfants sont une récompense. Les fils qu’un homme a dans sa jeunesse sont pareils à des flèches dans la main d’un guerrier: heureux l’homme qui en a rempli son carquois! Il n’aura pas honte quand il parlera avec des ennemis à la porte de la ville."

3 histoires sur 3 de ces mamans ! 

Nous aidons et soutenons de nombreuses familles. Beaucoup d'entre elles sont des mères célibataires. Il semble que dernièrement, il y ait certaines familles qui aient eu besoin d'une aide supplémentaire. Trois mamans en particulier ont pris beaucoup de temps à Rachel :

Une

Avec trois enfants âgés de 1 à 11 ans, elle est très occupée, mais son plus gros problème est sa dépendance à l'alcool. Elle reconnaît qu'elle a un problème mais ne peut pas s'arrêter de boire. Nous sommes inquiets pour les enfants, en particulier pour le plus jeune, car il passe beaucoup de temps dans la rue, près de sa maison, qui se trouve sur une route très fréquentée. Elle y passe du temps avec ses "amis" tandis que l'enfant joue au bord de la route. Sa fille de 11 ans vivait jusqu'à récemment chez une tante, mais elle a été mise à la porte et renvoyée chez sa mère. 

Les services sociaux ont été appelés à plusieurs reprises au sujet de la situation de cette famille et c'est très grave. Elle a peur que ses enfants soient enlevés mais n'a pas la force de changer les choses pour l'instant. Veuillez prier pour que nous marchions aux côtés de cette famille en indiquant à la mère la bonne direction et en prenant soin des enfants (ils viennent souvent jouer avec Lorenzo et Keoni, une petite évasion de leur réalité). Priez pour la sagesse et le discernement.

Deux

Elle a commencé à venir à notre groupe de mamans. Elle a deux filles, l'une a 11 ans qui vit avec le père (qui en a obtenu la garde quand elle avait 4 mois, après qu'il ait été décidé que la mère n'était pas en mesure de s'occuper d'elle). Sa deuxième fille a tout juste 4 mois. La mère vit encore dans le traumatisme de l'enlèvement de sa première fille et est super protectrice du bébé. Elle s'occupe bien du bébé mais nous remarquons des attitudes et des commentaires douteux de la part de la mère. 

Nous l'avons récemment aidée à déménager car elle était très stressée dans son ancien logement, disant que tout le monde l'observait et faisait des commentaires sur la façon dont elle s'occupait du bébé, etc. Nous espérons qu'au cours des prochains mois, lorsqu'elle s'installera dans sa nouvelle maison, elle consultera un psychologue et un psychiatre (demandé par des séances précédentes avec un psychologue). Encore une fois, priez pour la sagesse, le discernement et la confiance.

Trois

Cette maman ne vit pas dans notre communauté, mais Rachel a travaillé avec sa famille pendant environ 10 ans. Elle est maintenant elle-même maman de trois enfants âgés de 4 à 7 ans. Récemment, suite à de mauvaises décisions de sa part, son ex-petit ami s'en est pris à elle avec une arme dans l'intention de la tuer. La police a été appelée et la situation s'est temporairement résolue. Mais la mère s'est installée chez une amie pour se cacher (car l'homme a été relâché) avec ses enfants, jusqu'à ce qu'elle puisse trouver un autre endroit où vivre. Elle prend de lourds médicaments en raison du traumatisme subi et souffre de maladies mentales. 

Le gouvernement n'offre pas beaucoup de soutien pour des cas comme celui-ci, comme nous l'avons appris récemment. Nous essayons donc de l'aider à trouver un nouvel endroit où vivre, près de chez nous, afin que nous puissions l'aider davantage, notamment dans sa prise de décision pour éviter de retomber dans cette situation. Nous essayons également d'aider les enfants à surmonter les traumatismes qu'ils subissent à cause de cette situation et d'être une aide et un soutien pour cette maman dans tous les domaines. Encore une fois, priez pour la sagesse et le discernement !

Pedrinho

On vous avait déjà parlé de Pedrinho, un jeune de la favéla avec qui on a une forte amitié et qui aidait beaucoup Nico pendant un temps dans Casa Rocha. Aujourd'hui, il est étudiant dans une EFD (École de Formation de Disciples) à Goiânia (état de Goias). Ce cours de 5 à 6 mois est le premier cours que JEM propose à ceux qui veulent devenir des staffs à long terme, mais aussi à ceux qui souhaitent séparer un temps pour approfondir leur foi et apprendre certains principes de la vie chrétienne et avoir une expérience en mission.

Pedrinho est un jeune homme de la favéla qui fait partie de l'histoire de Casa Roch depuis le début en 2008. Il a même vécu pendant un certain temps avec une famille de missionnaires de Casa Rocha lorsqu'il était enfant car sa situation familiale était trop compliquée pour qu'il reste chez lui... Après avoir grandi, il a commencé à être volontaire dans le groupe d'enfants et nous avons été étonnés de voir à quel point il était à l'aise avec eux. Puis il a travaillé pendant près de deux ans dans une société minière où il sortait de chez lui à 5h du matin et rentrait à 19h30 pour un SMIC ! Pedrinho est aussi un chrétien fidèle qui cherche toujours à mieux comprendre la Parole de Dieu et est très impliqué dans son église ici dans la favéla.

Comme il était bénévole à Casa Rocha, nous avons partagé avec lui l'idée qu'il fasse une EFD et il a dit qu'il y pensait déjà et puis la pandémie est arrivée. Cette année, il a dit qu'il voulait le faire et nous l'avons accompagné tout au long du processus de préparation et de recherche d'une base où aller. Il a quitté son travail en mars avec pour projet de partir en mai, mais malheureusement l'EFD où il avait postulé n'a pas eu lieu. Il s'est inscrit sur une autre base pour le mois de juillet mais celle-ci a également été annulée. Mais il n'a pas baissé les bras et nous avons trouvé une EFD qui allait démarrer en août ! Il a été accepté et aujourd'hui il est là-bas, à la base de JEM Goiânia.

Lorsque Nico est allé le chercher en voiture dans la favéla pour charger les bagages, sa sœur a dit en pleurant qu'il est le premier de la famille à quitter la favéla" ! Et en plus de quitter la favela et l'état de Minas Gerais, il quittera également le pays car la phase pratique de son EFD devrait être en Espagne ! C'est une chance qu'il avait déjà son passeport puisqu'avant la pandémie il l'avait fait faire en espérant pouvoir voyager avec nous. 

Il apprécie beaucoup les cours et passe par certains processus de transformation que le Seigneur a pour lui. Nous sommes très reconnaissants à Dieu d'avoir témoigné et d'avoir marché avec Pedrinho ! Gloire à Dieu pour sa vie ! 

Leandro 

Un mercredi, on sonne à la porte... C'était Leandro, mais il était totalement méconnaissable! Il était ivre (ça on avait l'habitude) mais il était tout gonflé et paraissait perdre le mouvement de ses bras et de ses jambes.

Nous connaissons Leandro depuis assez longtemps, avant qu'il ne sombre dans l'alcool. Il était sympathique et joyeux, très avenant... Il louait un petit logement chez nos voisins et travaillait à la boucherie. Mais ce jour-là, nous étions très tristes de voir la situation dans laquelle il se trouvait ! Au début on pensait qu'il avait mélanger drogues et alcool mais il disait que non... Leandro demandait à aller dans un centre de désintoxication mais dans l'état où il se trouvait, il était impossible de l'emmener, alors nous l'avons accompagné au poste de santé dans la favéla. 

Nous n'avions aucun contact avec les membres de sa famille et quelqu'un de l'équipe a donc dû rester avec lui au pôle santé pendant des heures! Plus tard, nous avons finalement réussi à entrer en contact avec sa sœur qui est allée le rejoindre au moment où l'ambulance le transférait du pôle santé à l'hôpital où il est resté la nuit en observation. Le lendemain, nous avons contacté la sœur pour avoir des nouvelles de Leandro, et elle nous a dit qu'il était sorti de l'hôpital et qu'il était retourné dans la rue. Nous sommes allés le chercher dans la rue. On lui a parlé, il réagissait un peu mieux que la veille.

Nous avons donc décidé de l'emmener dans un centre de désintox, comme il le souhaitait. Nous sommes allés chercher des affaires qu'il avait chez sa soeur et sommes partis. Le centre est à 1h de Casa Rocha. Cela fait un peu plus de 3 semaines qu'il est là-bas et les retours qu'on a sont très positifs !!

Nous demandons que vous puissiez prier pour qu'il continue le traitement, que sa famille le soutienne et qu'il en sorte transformé grâce de la décision qu'il a prise de vouloir en terminer avec son addiction !

Nos recherches pour une maison

On vous avait partagé notre désir de pouvoir déménager dans une maison à l'extérieur de Casa Rocha. L'appartement où nous habitons depuis notre mariage mis à disposition par JEM est très mignon et cosy mais petit pour nous 4 (environ 40m2). L'absence d'un petit espace extérieur nous manque aussi beaucoup ! Mais il est très difficile de trouver une petite maison dans notre quartier proche de Casa Rocha (10-15min à pied), avec 3 chambres, un petit extérieur et qui soit dans nos prix. 

Finalement nous en avons trouvé une encore mieux que ce qu'on pouvait espérer !! On l'a vue en mai et on a pas signé de contrat de location encore car la propriétaire y a fait de gros travaux. Elle sera donc toute neuve et répondant à tous les critères ! Ce sera un défi financièrement car en vivant à l'extérieur de JEM, nos dépenses vont considérablement augmenter. Pour vous donner une idée, on payait 740 réais comme participation au loyer, factures d'eau, électricité et internet à Casa Rocha... Notre loyer à lui seul sera de 2300 réais dans cette maison sans compter l'eau, l'électricité ni internet. Mais on croit que ce défi en vaut la peine pour notre famille. D'ailleurs si vous souhaitez participer financièrement et commencer à nous soutenir dans la mission, vous pouvez entrer en contact par email ou whatsapp. Pour les photos on vous en mettra dans les prochaines nouvelles quand on aura emménagé si tout se passe bien.... La propriétaire nous a dit que normalement on aurait les clés début octobre.

Une église locale 

Enfin on a trouvé une église où on participe depuis environ 6 mois. Juste avant la pandémie, on avait quitté l'église où on allait pour plusieurs raisons. Et on pensait fréquenter l'église où on va actuellement. Mais avec la pandémie, tout les cultes étaient en ligne donc on en a profité pour suivre les cultes de nos églises en France et en Irlande du nord, parfois en direct (grâce au décalage horaire) parfois en replay. On a vraiment apprécié car on avait l'impression d'être plus proches... Mais la vie d'église et le contact avec les autres membres nous manquaient et en février nous avons commencé à fréquenter cette église "Batista Lagoinha Pedreira" - "Batista da Lagoinha" est une très grande église de Belo Horizonte qui a commencé à ouvrir des églises plus petites dans chaque quartier de la ville et "Pedreira" est le nom de la favela où on travaille (Pedreira Prado Lopes). C'est une petite église où plusieurs amis de la favéla sont membres. Lorenzo et Keoni participent de l'école du dimanche et Rachel va commencer bientôt à être professeure de l'école du dimanche. 

Cours biblique

Cela fait assez longtemps que je (Nico) voulais faire un cours biblique mais ne trouvait pas le temps et ne savait pas trop lequel... La seule chose que je savais est que je voulais le faire en français car mon école de disciple était en anglais et mon école sur le développement communautaire en portugais... Je n'ai jamais fait de cours en relation avec ma foi ou la mission en français ! Quand on était en Europe en fin d'année dernière j'ai vraiment senti que c'était le moment. Après discussion avec notre pasteur Philippe à Avignon et quelques recherches, je me suis finalement inscrit à l'Institut de Théologie pour la Francophonie au Canada ! J'ai commencé les cours en ligne il y a deux semaines et ça fait vraiment bizarre de revenir aux études après plusieurs années, avec les enfants et toujours la responsabilité de Casa Rocha. La quantité de travail est assez conséquente et des fois j'ai peur de ne pas y arriver mais c'est super intéressant !! A priori je suis parti pour 3 ou 4 ans (ça dépendra du nombre de matières que j'arriverai à faire chaque semestre). J'ai pour l'instant juste eu quelques cours d'introduction et c'est super intéressant d'apprendre pourquoi la Bible peut être considérée comme très crédible historiquement par exemple. C'est un vrai défi compte-tenu du temps de travail que ça me demande et du temps que j'ai à donner mais je suis super motivé (pourvu que ça dure !!!). Si vous voulez prier pour que j'arrive à m'organiser, me discipliner mais aussi pour les fruits en moi.

Lots going on in ministry and personally!

It's back to school for you but in Brazil the school year goes on. The topics of conversation here are often the same: the next presidential elections and Brazil, which has to win the upcoming world cup! For the first one we won't talk about it here to avoid very strong arguments as it's often the case here and for the second one we can only hope that they are wrong and that France wins... haha.

But we still have a few stories to tell you with some news about our family and the mission. Thank you again for your prayers (and please don't stop!), for your financial participation (please don't stop either!). 

Mums and Tots!

As we shared in our previous blog, for a while now, Rachel, as a mum, has been trying to get involved in the life of the mums of the slum. Many of the mums she notices are very young mums, sometimes teenagers (17 years old). She invites them to our house to chat and share and drink a coffee. One day she invited two mums together to see how it would go and one of them asked why Casa Rocha didn't have a specific group for mums. During our short break in July (in Brazil, schools have a 2 week holiday at the end of July), Rachel took time to pray and think about the idea...

The idea became a project!

We started the mum's group on 11th August! Every Thursday morning, they come to Casa Rocha with their babies to have a time together and share their experiences. Rachel also shares a short word each week from the Bible. Often there is a crying baby, a nappy to change or 2 children fighting over toys, so the word is short and often interrupted, but a word shared is a seed sown!

The group started with 4 mums and has grown to 9 mums now. They are all super motivated by the group and dream of what we could do together - swimming with their babies (when the weather gets warmer, it's still between 14 and 25C), going on trips to parks for picnics, having a meal with all our families on a Sunday lunchtime... It's great to see how this idea came from one of them and how excited they are to be together!

So far Rachel has been using Lorenzo's and Keoni's toys and other equipment for the group, but the idea would be to have specific toys that belong to the group. We would need some people to support this financially so that we can invest in play mats, toys for babies and toddlers and so on. I would love to be able to buy some simple prams that we can lend to these young mums too! (See attachment for financial project in email if you are interested). 

Pray for the young mothers who come each week; may they be encouraged and strengthened to continue to care for their little ones whom God has entrusted into their hands, especially as the majority were never planning on becoming mums so young!

Psalm 127:3 - 5: "The inheritance the Lord gives is sons; children are a reward. The sons a man has in his youth are like arrows in the hand of a warrior; blessed is the man who has filled his quiver with them. He will not be ashamed when he speaks with enemies at the city gate."

More about... Mums! 

We walk along side helping and supporting many families. Many of these are single mums. It seems lately that there have been a few needy cases that have required some extra help. 3 mum's specifically have been taking up a lot of Rachel's time:

One

With 3 kids ageing between 1 and 11 she has her hands full, but her biggest problem is her addiction to drink. She recognises she has a problem but can't stop drinking. We are worried about the kids especially the youngest as she spends a lot of time on the street close to her house which is on a busy road. She spends time there with her 'friends' while her youngest plays by the roadside. Her 11 year old daughter was up until recently, living with an aunt, but was thrown out and sent back to her mother. 

The Social Services have been called many times about the situation of this family and it's very serious. She is worried about her kids being taken but doesn't have the strength to make changes. Please pray as we walk along side this family pointing the mother in the right direction and taking care of the kids (they often come over to play with Lorenzo and Keoni, a little escape from their reality). Pray for wisdom and discernment.

Two

She started coming to our mum's group. She has 2 daughters, one is 11 and living with her dad (who was awarded custody when she was 4 months old, after it was decided that the mum was unfit to take care of her). Her second daughter is just 4 months old. The mum still lives in the trauma of her first daughter been taken away and is over protective of the baby. She takes good care of the baby but we notice some questionable attitudes and comments from the mother. 

We recently helped her move house as she was super stressed out in her previous location saying that everyone was watching her and making comments about how she takes care of the baby and so on. We are hoping in these next months that she settles in her new home, that she will see a psychologist and psychiatrist. (requested by previous sessions with a psychologist). Again pray for wisdom and discernment and trust.

Three

This mum doesn't live in our community, but Rachel has worked with her family for about 10 years. She is now a mum herself to 3 kids between 4 and 7 years old. Recently, from some bad decisions made by her, her ex-boyfriend came after her with a gun with the intentions to kill her. The police were called and the situation resolved. But the mum has moved in with a friend 'in hiding,' with her kids until she can find somewhere else to live. She is taking heavy medication because of the trauma and is suffering some mental illnesses. 

The government don't offer much support for cases like this as we recently found out, so we are trying to help her look for a new place to live, close to us so we can help her more, especially in her decision-making to avoid falling into this situation again. Also to help the kids through the traumas they are suffering from this situation and to be a help and support to this mum in all areas. Yet again, pray for wisdom and discernment!

Pedro (known as Pedrinho!)

We already told you about Pedrinho, a young man from the slum with whom we have a strong friendship and who helped Nico a lot in Casa Rocha. Today, he is a student in a DTS (Discipleship Training School) in Goiânia (Goias state). This 5-6 month course is the first course that YWAM offers to those who want to become long term staff, but also to those who want to set aside time to deepen their faith and learn some principles of Christian life and have an experience in mission.

Pedrinho has been part of the Casa Rocha story since the beginning of 2008. He even lived with a missionary family from the project for a while when he was a child because his family situation was too complicated for him to stay at home... After he grew up, he started volunteering in the children's group and we were amazed at how well he interacted with them. Then he worked for almost two years in a mining company where he left home at 5am and came home at 7.30pm for minimum wage! Pedrinho is also a faithful Christian who is always seeking to better understand the Word of God and is very involved in his church here in the slum.

As he was volunteering at Casa Rocha, we shared with him the idea of him doing a DTS and he said he was already thinking about it and then the pandemic happened. This year he said he wanted to do it and we helped him through the process of preparing and finding a base to go to. He left his job in March with plans to go in May, but unfortunately the DTS he applied for did not happen. He applied for another base for July, but this was also cancelled. But he didn't give up and we found a DTS that would start in August! He was accepted and today he is there, at the YWAM Goiânia base.

When Nico went to pick him up in the slum to take him to the bus stop, his sister said crying that he is the first from the family to leave the slum! And in addition to leaving the slum and the state of Minas Gerais, he will also leave the country because the outreach phase of his DTS seems like it will be in Spain! It's a good thing he already had his passport as before the pandemic he had it done hoping to travel with us. 

He is enjoying the courses very much and is going through some of the transformation processes that the Lord has for him. We are very grateful to God for witnessing and walking with Pedrinho! Glory to God for his life! 

Leandro 

One Wednesday morning, the doorbell rang... It was Leandro, but he was totally unrecognisable! He was drunk (we were used to that) but he was all swollen and seemed to lose the movement of his arms and legs.

We have known Leandro for quite some time, before he fell into a life of alcohol. He was friendly and cheerful, very personable... He was renting a small flat in our neighbour's house and was working in the butcher's shop. But on this specific day we were very sad to see the situation he was in! At first we thought he had mixed drugs and alcohol but he said he hadn't... Leandro asked to go to a rehab but in the state he was in, it was impossible to take him, so we took him to the free health centre in the slum. We had no contact with his family members at first, so someone from the team had to stay with him at the health centre for hours! Later, we finally managed to get in touch with his sister who went to meet him as the ambulance was transferring him from the health centre to the hospital where he stayed overnight for observation. The next day we contacted the sister to get news about Leandro, and she told us that he had been released from the hospital and was back on the street. We went to look for him and found him. We talked to him and he was acting a bit better than the day before. So we decided to take him to a rehab, which is what he wanted. The centre is an hour away from Casa Rocha! He has been there for nearly a month and the feedback we are getting is very positive!

We ask that you pray that he continues in treatment, that his family supports him and that he comes out of it transformed because of the decision he made to end his addiction!

Our search for a home

We shared with you our desire to be able to move to a house outside Casa Rocha. The flat we've been living in since our wedding, provided by YWAM, is very nice and cosy but small for the 4 of us (about 40m2). We also really miss the lack of a small outdoor space! But it is very difficult to find a small house to rent in our neighbourhood near Casa Rocha (within a 10-15min walk), with 3 bedrooms, a small outside space and which is within our price range. 

Finally we found one that was even better than we expected! We saw it in May and we haven't signed a rental contract yet because the owner has done some major work on it. So it will be brand new and meet all the criteria, just a little more expensive than we expected! It will be a challenge financially because living outside YWAM, our expenses will increase considerably. To give you an idea, we were paying 740 Reais as a contribution to the rent, water, electricity and internet bills at Casa Rocha... Our rent alone will be 2300 Reais in this house, not including water, electricity and internet. But we believe that this challenge is worth it for our family and it's God who has been opening the doors for us to go in this direction. The landlady has told us that we should have the keys by the beginning of October!

A local church 

Finally, we have settled in a church, the one we have been attending for about 6 months. Just before the pandemic, we had left the church we were attending for several reasons. With the pandemic, all the services were online so we took the opportunity to follow the services of our churches in France and Northern Ireland, sometimes live (thanks to the time difference) or sometimes on replay. We really enjoyed it because it felt like we were closer... But we missed the church life and the contact with the other members. 

In February we started to attend this church "Batista Lagoinha Pedreira".  "Lagoinha Baptista" is a very large church in Belo Horizonte that has started to open smaller churches in every neighbourhood of the city and "Pedreira" is the name of the slum where we work (Pedreira Prado Lopes). So we attend this one in our slum, it is a small church where several friends from the slum are members. Keoni has now started to attend the children's church along with Lorenzo, which has been a blessing. He usually cries when we first arrive in church until he starts playing with the toys then he settles and is well behaved so the ladies let him stay (it is usually only for 2 years and older). Rachel will also soon start teaching in the Sunday school. 

Bible School

I (Nico) have been wanting to do a Bible school for a number of years now but couldn't find the time and wasn't sure which one to do... The only thing I knew was that I wanted to do it in French because my Discipleship School with YWAM was in English and my Community Development School was in Portuguese... I never did any courses related to my faith or mission in French! When we were in Europe at the end of last year I really felt it was time. After discussions with my pastor Philippe in Avignon and some research, I finally enrolled in the 'Institut de Théologie pour la Francophonie' in Canada! I started the online courses a fortnight ago and it feels really strange to be back studying after several years. The amount of work is quite substantial and sometimes I'm afraid I won't be able to do it, especially with the kids and still Casa Rocha to support but it's really interesting! I'm looking at 3 or 4 years (depending on how many subjects I manage to do each semester). So far I've just had a few introductory classes and it's really interesting to learn why the Bible can be considered very credible, historically, for example. It's a real challenge because of the amount of work I have to do and the amount of time I have to give but I'm super motivated (as long as it lasts!!!). If you can, pray that I will be able to organise everything, to discipline myself but also for the fruits of the Spirit to grow in me.

So as you can read, we still have lots going on in the ministry but also personally. We look forward to our next update with you, hopefully it won't take so long to write and hopefully we can share with you about how it has been going with the new house! Thanks for reading with us.
